But Betty brings up a good point. I sort of rolled my eyes at the level of naïveté they’ve heaped upon America Ferrera’s capable acting shoulders, because seriously, Betty’s worked for a fashion magazine for what, two years now? And she’s shocked that designers want thin models? Welcome to the real world, folks. Yes, models are unnaturally tall and thin, and for all of the Size Zero backlash, no one ever pouts about the fact that the 5'2" cheerleader-type is losing out on a role model. They aren’t role models. They’re fashion models. Okay, I’m playing devil’s advocate. You caught me. The show pulled it around nicely, having a great feel-good moment with Betty up on the runway, looking stunning, and several average and totally gorgeous women strutting their stuff on the runway. I probably put too much pressure on the show and should just watch for my favorite parts, mostly anything with Mark (who is TOTALLY my fantasy bff. That tramp Amanda just doesn’t deserve him). I want it to be more than just a pseudo-soap opera. I keep wanting there to be a deeper message, and yet, they keep making Betty do silly things, make out with the dorky geek boy (although VERY studly, and during the dance scene a few eps ago, when Henry had his shirt off, I think I might have licked the television) and fall down at the first opportunity to show that she’s the one we should be laughing at here. But maybe I'm asking too much. What do you guys think? Does Ugly Betty ever seem a little too pandery? A little too much like it's pushing the PC After School Special message? Or am I becoming too jaded after surfing through countless gossip Websites? Clue me in, guys. —Weetabix 5 CommentsLeave a comment |

Sometimes I think it's better when they aren't apologetic for how the fashion industry is. I am not thin, I'm not even close but I have to admitt if I'm looking for clothes I look at what the smaller size looks like first - clothes do look better on smaller people and that's just a fact of life. When you're looking at designer clothes you're not just buying into that top you're buying into that image and a tall, thin, beautifully made up woman looks better than your average woman. It's like anything, your average Big Mac looks absolutely nothing like the glamour shots they have on the adverts, you still buy the Big Mac anyway and you never expect it to look like the Big Mac on the photo but it's that photo which makes you want it.
I love Ugly Betty and Amanda in particular (sorry she rocks!)
I have a problem with the fact that America Fererra is always touted as being for the "real women" and even "big girls" when she's a SIZE SIX. And she's never been bigger than a size eight! (Even when she did that movie Real Women Have Curves.) Um, hello? Anyone who's a size 6 is nowhere near a "big girl". Sure, I'm glad she's not a size 0... but come on, let's be more honest here!
i just get shitty that Ugly Betty is ten types hotter than I ever was! So, whenever she gets ridiculed I think - yeah right! What do you have to worry about skinny girl?
Do you think the writer's strike will mean tha tOz might catch up a little on Days? I think we are currently 7 years behind or something!!!!!!!
Weetabix I love you, but UgBetE IS just a pseudo-pc soap opera. C'est tout.
I heart Ugly Betty for its campy telenovela plot and sets and costumes. The revolution's not coming from ABC folks, and I think Betty as a character has less to say to women of size than of color. In other words, I think having a Chicana/o family at the center of the plot, as normal, rather than as "crazy ethnic" is a much more dramatic change in business as usual--same goes for having Latina/os behind the camera too.
